North Alabama Korean School is releasing Korean Lab, a free online vocabulary tool, on the school website for our students and their families. It begins with 295 picture cards and will grow to 1,500. No separate app needs to be downloaded and there is no cost; it can be used directly on a phone, tablet, or computer.
Korean Lab does not begin with grammar explanations or translation drills. The screen shows one picture and one word, and a native speaker says it aloud. Four native speakers share the recording of every word, so that a different voice answers each time the picture is tapped, and students learn the sound itself rather than one person's version of it. Words that name an action move in a short video, showing the meaning directly.
This online tool organizes the 1,500 words Koreans use often in real conversation by how frequently they are used. Learning only the 295 words open today lets a student encounter about 37% of the words used in everyday conversation. That is, it is built so that the words heard and used often in daily life come first, ahead of difficult or rarely used ones.
Its most distinctive feature is that different cards are presented according to each student's level. For each word the program records whether the answer was correct, how long it took to answer, and which words are often confused, and uses this to follow the student's understanding. Words that are often missed are shown again, and words that are well learned drop out of the study list naturally. When a word already learned is not remembered well, new-word study pauses so that what has been learned can be reviewed thoroughly first. In this way review does not pile up so far that studying becomes a burden.
There are rewards as well, so that students enjoy staying with it. For every hundred words learned they receive one of fifteen medals, beginning at 씨앗 and passing through 새싹 and 꽃 to 무궁화 — the same order as our own class names. As the words add up, a dusty cassette player on the screen is cleaned and a K-pop-style song opens, one at a time, and a student who earns a first medal may place their name on the Hall of Names.
Korean Lab is not an existing learning program brought in and reused. It is a custom learning tool developed specifically to help the students of North Alabama Korean School learn Korean.
Getting started is simple. Open northalabamakoreanschool.org/learn-korean on a phone and the first card appears immediately. In Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android, tap the Share button and choose "Add to Home Screen," and an icon appears just like an app so it opens in one tap from then on. To save learning history and medals, please sign in with a Google account; without signing in, the record stays only on that one device.
Korean Lab does not replace the classroom. What we hope for is that a child meets the words learned with a teacher again at home, and then builds sentences from those words back in class. We will keep adding cards and refining the tool with our teachers' guidance.
